The Recovery School District's early childhood classrooms support opportunities for students’ optimal development of cognitive, social, emotional, language, literacy and motor skills through developmentally appropriate learning experiences and a nurturing environment.
Current Programs and Services:
Cecil J. Picard LA4 Pre-Kindergarten Program serves four-year old children in full-day pre-kindergarten classes. Children must be 4 years old by September 30, 2007. Proof of residency, child’s birth certificate, social security card and immunization record must be presented at time of registration. Kindergarten children must be 5 years old by September 30, 2007.
The Recovery School District has chosen The Creative Curriculum for Preschool, researched-based, as the blueprint for planning and implementing a developmentally appropriate early childhood program. The Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum, Grade-Level-Expectations and Harcourt Trophies will guide instruction within the framework of The Creative Curriculum for Preschool.
The Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale is used to ensure a high quality learning environment.
Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten Grade-Level-Expectations Portfolios will be used to record progress toward accomplishing Grade-Level Expectations.
Inclusive Programs for Preschoolers with Disabilities - One of the early childhood program’s strengths is inclusive education. All children are included in our District LA4 classes.
Early Childhood Coalition is a collaboration of local agencies which work with young children. This coalition seeks to bring agencies’ services for all young children in the area together. Members meet to address issues such as quality childcare initiatives, family involvement, and provision of appropriate health services.
Parents as Teachers is a new initiative developing in the Recovery School District. It is a family support program designed to enhance child development and school achievement through parent education accessible to all families. It will assist our teen parents during pregnancy and until the teen graduates to create a safe and nurturing home for their child.
Virtual Pre-K and Kindergarten is a teacher-created resource for parents and teachers that connects the classroom, home and community, in English and Spanish.
Literacy (PK-3)
The Recovery School District is following Reading First guidelines. The purpose is to support schools in implementing a comprehensive reading program rooted in scientifically based reading research and aligned to the Louisiana Learning Standards and Grade-Level-Expectations. Harcourt Trophies is the scientifically based reading research program used in RSD Pk-3 Classrooms. The focus is to increase the amount of high-quality literacy instruction in the two-hour reading and language arts block and to improve instructional materials in the two-hour reading block through recommended basal reading series and recommended narrative and expository reading lists. Evidenced-based practices and progress monitoring identifies struggling students. A Reading Interventionist at each school provides additional instruction/intervention to struggling students. Benchmark and progress monitoring instruments used are DIBELS, Harcourt Assessment, and Voyager Passport.
