The Recovery School District provides school-based nursing services to all of its direct-operated schools. The school nurse plays a crucial role on each school’s wellness team.

 


 

School nurses:

 

  • Provide direct health care to students and staff who are ill or who have been injured. School nurses assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for students with chronic health conditions.
  • Provide services to students with Individualized Education Plans, including participation on Individualized Education Plan and 504 teams, supervising or providing for student’s special health needs and outlining progression to be followed in teaching students to be as independent as possible.
  • Promote health by educating students and faculty on health topics and providing leadership to the school on initiatives that promote wellness and healthy lifestyles.
  • Serve in a leadership role for health policies, serves as a team liaison to the medical community and identifies health concerns within each school.
  • Serve as liaisons between school personnel, family, community on health issues and facilitates communication between parents of students with health concerns or special health needs and the education teams.
  • Educate parents/guardians about their responsibilities in maintaining students’ current records of health concerns, goals and interventions.
  • Report summary of health status to Pupil Appraisal Support Services (PASS), assists in identification of 504 accommodations and/or health related IEP goals, serves as team liaison to the medical community, and identifies heath concerns for transition to independent living.
  • Review and distribute students’ care plans to appropriate school staff using professional judgment in deciding who should have medical information. Care plans could include Individualized Health Plan, 504 Accommodation Plan, Medication Plan and Emergency Care Plan.
  • Provide training to non-licensed staff for Individual Health Plans for care of students needing tracheotomy care, gastrotomy feedings, continuous intermittent catherization, and medication administration during school hours.  Also provides CPR and First Aid training for staff.
