The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) governs how public agencies, including school systems, provide early intervention, special education and related services.

The Recovery School District’s IDEA office ensures the “life long achievement of every child through effective and innovative teaching that meets the needs of individual learners,” including those with disabilities. This office envisions, along with the district’s mission, a school system where all students, families, schools and community members share the motivation, knowledge, and skills to work together to ensure that all children with disabilities are learning, progressing and meeting higher expectations.
Services are provided on a broad continuum for students ages three 3 through 21. Following a comprehensive assessment that may include a psychological evaluation, educational testing, speech-language assessment, audiological testing and other assessments, a student may be eligible to receive services in one or more of the following categories: autism, hearing impaired, other health impaired, related services, visually impaired, emotional/behavior disordered, orthopedically impaired, preschool services, specific learning disabilities, traumatic brain injury, mild, moderate and severe disabilities and hospital homebound services.
Services are provided through inclusion in the regular classroom in all elementary and high schools.
